Seen: Maxwell Street Days

Photos by Kyle Bursaw

If you're lucky, the moment comes at least once every time you head down to State Street for Maxwell Street Days -- the moment where you pick something up, check the price tag, and think, "This is way too low a price for this. I'm actually stealing from these people if I buy this."

Fortunately, the guilt evaporates pretty quickly in the hot summer sun, as you move from stall to stall along with the other bargain hunters. Last weekend's Maxwell Street Days brought thousands of them out to buy flip-flops, sundresses, discounted CDs, greeting cards and almost everything else one can think of. They were propelled by the thrill of the chase, fueled by brats, chicken kebabs and other good street food, and buoyed by music from one of the several stages along State Street.

And, if that hip $10 designer T-shirt from Context or that awesome $2 Matador Records sampler from B-Side you got last weekend still seems like a steal, remember that the many locally owned downtown stores are open the rest of the year for business, too.
